Business Items (30 min) Liz

  • Safe Route Discussion
  • Liz has been to the SNAP meetings. They have identified spots that need immediate attention

    • By Herm’s Inn on Canyon Road there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. Students need to safely get to bus stops on the elementary and secondary levels.
    • On the corner of 1st North and 500 East there is no crosswalk painted to get to the south side of the road at the Y type intersection. Very difficult to cross there
    • Cliffside Dr. does not have a sidewalk on both sides of the street. Not a serious concern right now as those students are all bus students and don’t need proper access to walk.
    • Look around as we are driving to see if there are places where the paint is wearing off that could be redone this winter. We have extra funds, but not the best paint. They can do a temporary paint that will be something that is better than nothing.
  • Literacy Night
  • We have a good amount of books, could use more, but will probably be sufficient. Liz will get the popcorn for the treat that will be handed out for Literacy Night.
January 13th- scheduled date for the Winter Carnival

  • Homework Policy
    • Parents really appreciate the newsletters that come home with the topics that students are learning
    • You may receive pressure from parents who prefer to have homework (social pressures)
    • Parents don’t see progress without anything coming home.
    • Parents definitely don’t want their children punished (no recess) for not having homework done.
    • Best solution from their perspective is to send work to be done with students whose parents want to do it with them, or for students who want the extra work. There would be an understanding that there is no pressure for teachers to collect it.
    • Good question brought up...is it worth or too costly to run all the homework if it’s optional or not going to be returned? Could there be other resources (websites shared) etc for extra practice for parents to work with children by choice?
    • Parents all agree that responsibility is not just learned through homework and that it isn’t always apparent what is going on at home, even if the situation looks like the child should be successful.
    • Reading homework is non-negotiable.
