Safety discussion with Doug Weber-Student services specialist:

  • City must do a warrant study to determine if a crossing guard/cross walk/etc. is needed (study is being done by a 3rd party)
    • New study coming soon, looking at the 4 corners around Wilson
      • Count how many students, how many vehicles, how fast the vehicles are both before and after school
      • Could determine a school crossing (striped crosswalk), could determine crossing guard is warranted (always optional, but police department will not fund unless required)
        • Wilson could have aids/volunteers go through the crossing guard course where we could fund that, or it could be voluntary and unpaid (only on the striped school zone crosswalks)
  • SCC determines the safe routes, which tell where striped crosswalks and crossing guards could be placed by the cities

Concerns: Crossing guards hired by PD, therefore liability is on PD if something happens. If we have volunteer crossing guards, the school would be liable.

SCC: build safe routes, what sides of roads are best, where to cross, etc.

26/27 goals:

  • Increase reading BOY to EOY by 12% as measured by Acadience
  • Increase math BOY to EOY by 22% as measured by MAP Growth
  • Increase EL student progress by at least 1 level as measured by WIDA

Best way to get information out to parents:

  • Parent square can have too much, parents don’t read everything
    • Sometimes all schools + district will send posts with the same info, so parents skip a lot
  • Get parents to follow Wilson’s social media more: better way to get updates than Parent Square sometimes
  • Encourage parents to follow the social media, every month draw a few parent names for their students to get a book token
  • Post every so often asking for likes/comments and draw from those as well

Outdoor learning survey to be sent to parents by next week–change from the idea of a “magnet” school to just a school with an outdoor learning focus

Concern about lunch: Kids not eating as much lunch due to wanting to go play and not being hungry. Could we swap so kids can play first and burn energy then eat?

  • If we reverse, the challenge is what to do with kids who finish early? They don’t have a place to go after they finish eating
    • Eric tried at a previous school, didn’t see any different results

Parent night for technology on October 28th at 5:30. Police will be there to present and talk to parents. Parents can bring their tech and get assistance and learn about what apps are good for kids, how to be safe online, etc.

Motion to adjourn: Ryan, seconded by Candis, unanimously approved
